President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday signed the Women Protection Bill into law during a ceremony at the chief minister house. Passed by National Assembly on January 21 and a day earlier by Senate, the law provides for increased punishment over harassment of women at workplaces.
Protection against Harassment of Women at Workplace Bill-2009 amends Pakistan Penal Code and Code of Criminal Procedure, increasing punishment for the crime up to three years in prison and fine of up to Rs500,000.
The president signed the bill in the presence of large number of women from various sections of society, who termed it a landmark decision, reflecting the desire of the government to ensure dignity and honour of women. Zardari said that the emancipation and empowerment of women in the country was a cherished dream of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto who throughout her life fought for this cause.
“Our government, in line with the vision of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, is taking all steps to ensure that women are not only emancipated from exploitation of all forms but also empowered in real sense,” he added.
He said that emancipation of women and giving them rightful place in society forms part of PPP manifesto, adding, “We can only ensure this by providing financial security, stability and creating opportunities for women”.
