False assurance

False assurance

By   Vikash Anand

A few days ago Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh stated during an election rally in Assam: “We have been assured that Pakistan’s nuclear weapons are in safe hands as of now”.

This statement shows how much immature in diplomacy Indian Prime Minister is. If it doest not show diplomatic   immaturity, then one thing might be possible that Prime Minister is not aware what is happening in our neighbourhood. Both immaturity and unawareness are dangerous for a country which has independent foreign policy.

Now it is a fact that the Taliban militants in Pakistan’s Swat Valley have extended their reach and grip to neighbouring northwest district. Islamabad, capital of the nuclear-armed nation is less than 100 miles (160 kilometers) from Taliban’s sway. Even America ,a major source of aid to Pakistan ,is worried about Talibanization of Pakistan. American foreign secretary Hillary Clinton expressing doubts and said that Taliban and Al –Qaeda could topple the government and after toppling the government Taliban might take control of Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal. It is very clear that America is less Vern able in comparison to India is worried about what happening in Pakistan. But our Prime Minister has faith in Pakistani Administration.

Really the Indian Prime Minister’s immature statement recognizes Pakistan as a responsible country instead of a failed state.

India`s stand towards Pakistan should be to create pressure so as to dismantle terror outfits which operate in Pakistan. The Mumbai 26/11 incident clearly exposes Pakistan exporting terrorists to India. After investigation it was also known that a Pakistan official was involved in accomplishing the mission 26/11. The Pakistan Army had trained the Mumbai attackers. The nexus between the Pakistan Army and Jihadi group is very strong. This strong nexus has not taken place recently but happened during General Musharf’s rule. And it is very difficult to cut this nexus. Perhaps due to this nexus with Jihadis and the Pakistani government had to bend before Talibani  militants and made peace deal with them. According to the deal Talibani militant cover roughly one-third of Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province, a strategic stretch along the Afghan border and the tribal areas where Al-Qaida and the Taliban have strongholds.

Under the deal, the provincial government agreed to impose Islamic law (Sharia Law).

But under US pressure the Pakistan government was forced to start military operations against Taliban. It is this very hold on Pakistan by the Taliban that will encourage terror outfits in Pakistan, including the Lashkar-e-Taiba and the Jamaat-ud-dawa and other anti-India groups, to continue terror strikes against India.

Already the Indian government has failed to create diplomatic pressure to stop aid or reduce aid to Pakistan by the world community. Off late, Pakistan has got aid not only from United State of America but also from the European Union, Japan, Arab countries among others. A private American  think tank Rand indicates the possibility of a repeat of terror attack as in Mumbai. Recent attacks in Assam(a state of india) more or less were routed from Pakistan. Talibanzed Pakistan will be more dangerous for peace in India because Pakistan is one of the closest neighbors. Once   former Indian  Prime Minister  Atal Bihari Vajpayee said, “We can change our friend but not our neighbor”. Only a peaceful neighbor can ensure a peaceful India. And Pakistan is on surge of a failed state   and Indian PM   has more faith in so called Pakistani Civil government and its control over nuclear arsenal.
