Appreciating the efforts and struggle of legal fraternity during Lawyers Movement his Lordship said that the lawyers struggled hard to standby the Judiciary for rule of law and supremacy of the Constitution. A two-member bench of the Supreme Court on Friday summoned Chief Executive Officer (CEO) cable operators and directed the Chairman Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) to take strict action against those operators who have blocked the transmission of two private TV channels in Sindh and Punjab.
The bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhary and Justice Khalil-ur-Rehman Ramday was hearing identical petitions against the closure of transmission of the TV channels.During the proceeding the court summoned Federal Secretary Ministry of Interior Qamar Zaman Chaudhary, Federal Secretary Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Mansoor Suhail and Chairman PEMRA Mushtaq Chaudhary through SC registrar office. ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has said that the apex court must support the parliamentary system and should not weaken the chief executive and the prime minister.
Heading the 17-member full bench on Monday, the CJP observed that despite the parliamentary form of government in the country, the prime minister been has been excluded from the process of the appointment of judges to the country’s superior courts through the formation of the judicial commission under the 18th Amendment. Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Thursday has said that the corruption will not be tolerated at any cost because it not only affects the performance of the institutions but also brings bad name to the country. The Bar should pinpoint corruption in the judiciary at any level so that the corrupt elements could be uprooted from the sacred institution of judiciary, he said. The people associated with judiciary should not indulge themselves into malpractices as it brought bad name to the institution, he held this while addressing the delegation of Islamabad Bar Association headed by its Ex-President Niaz Ullah Niazi and comprising other 90 members and office bearers.
The Chief Justice further said that the cells for eradication of corruption had also been established in each High Court as well as the Supreme Court. The CJ said any complaint with evidences regarding corruption could be sent to the cell adding that the Bars should play their role to pinpoint corruption in their respective areas, he added.
Appreciating the efforts and struggle of Islamabad Bar in Lawyers’ Movement, he said that the Bar moved heaven and earth to support the cause of rule of law and supremacy of the Constitution, he said. Read More
A 17-member larger bench of the Supreme Court admonished one of the petitioners challenging the 18th Amendment, as the latter threw a copy of the amended constitution on the floor.
As the bench – headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry – was hearing arguments, one of the petitioners – Shahid Orakzai – threw a copy of the constitution on the floor, saying he did not accept the amendment and would prefer the original 1973 Constitution over the amended one.
The bench, lawyers sitting in the courtroom and journalists condemned Orakzai’s act.
The CJP admonished Orakzai, saying such humiliation of the constitution would not be tolerated, and ordered the petitioner to extend an apology, otherwise he would be issued a contempt of court notice. Read More
